“Cracking Ice”

by Sky Saxon and The Seeds
2004 song

Sky Saxon had long been partial to apocalyptic warnings in his lyrics, and 2004’s "Cracking Ice" seems to follow the trend decades after it began. The outrageous fuzz-rocker from the album Red Planet by Sky Saxon and The Seeds (actually a new band with Sky) would be more frightening if it weren’t so musically enjoyable.

Peculiar keyboard notes and that raunchy guitar dart around each other while the drums maintain a steady beat just this side of sane. Over this familiar landscape Sky bellows angrily about warning signs, lakes splitting apart, and people living in a haze. "Cracking Ice" sounds very much like the front cover of Red Planet looks – a fiery alien tableau that, just maybe, used to be Earth. Sky and his fellow damn dirty apes are just trying to help, and they prefer to do so from the comfort of their sweaty, mood-lit garage.
