“Black Beans”

by Sky Sunlight Saxon Dragonslayers SSS
1989 song

Poppy but still mired in tough hard rock, "Black Beans" from the 1989 album Just Imagine offers Sky Saxon yet another chance to channel his warnings about humanity into a set of lyrics that address an actual identifiable aspect of the modern human condition. The tune’s title should perhaps be “Poor Boy”, for that is what Sky sings over and over. Rather than the doomsday scenes of some of his past music, finally Sky is focusing on specific ills and identifying what needs to be fixed. That, and grunting suddenly as if he needs to vomit.

Oddly, on "Black Beans" keyboardist Mars Bonfire finds a tone and some riffs that make the song resemble a regular 1980s radio pop song more than a savage explosion of the Dragonslayers’ usual coldly psychedelic rock. Well, somewhat – it is after all Sky Saxon, who sounds enraged as he goes off on a tangent about vegetarianism. "Black Beans" is almost enough to make you feel guilty about eating meat, and shake your hips while you’re doing it.
