“Fallin’ Off The Edge Of My Mind” / “Wild Blood”

by The Seeds
1969 7-inch single
Label: Crescendo [GNP 422]

This was The Seeds’ last-gasp release on GNP Crescendo before the band, no longer in its original incarnation, and the label parted ways. Both of the songs on this 7-inch are enjoyable – "Fallin' Off The Edge Of My Mind" in particular is now recognized as a Seeds classic, goofy though it is – but it did not trouble the record-buying public in 1969.

Both songs were co-written by Sky Saxon’s Los Angeles L.A. hipster buddy Kim Fowley, who also produced them.

The record was released with its labels in GNP Crescendo’s usual 1960s red-label style. It is credited merely to THE SEEDS – there is no mention of Sky Saxon specifically. (Note that a white-label promo of this single, featuring both songs, uses the full credit SKY SAXON AND THE SEEDS while this stock label copy does not.)

"Fallin' Off The Edge Of My Mind" / "Wild Blood" was not released in a picture sleeve; the money-losing expense of the plastic vinyl bag that the previous "Satisfy You" / "900 Million People Daily (All Making Love)" single had come in must have weighed heavily on Crescendo.

As far as we can tell, this single was never re-released by GNP Crescendo after its initial run; there seem to be no orange-label 1970s copies around. Copies of the 1969 original are not particularly common in sales marketplaces but there are usually a couple floating around for sale if you’d like to complete your Seeds GNP singles collection.

With the unexpected and zany pedal steel guitar on the A-side, and the blatant Troggs rip-off of "Wild Blood", both sides the final Seeds single is a hell of a lot of fun to spin on a turntable.
